My favorite prayer has always been the Prayer of St. Francis. I have indeed been made an instrument of peace as I have become a Secular Franciscan, professed for several years, and was asked to be the Minister of my Fraternity. It has been both a blessing and a great challenge to be an instrument of peace not only in the Fraternity with its diverse membership but also in my office. I work in a large office as a legal secretary and trying to create peace and sow love has definitely been challenging. I also have 3 children, all of whom are ADHD to keep peace among them has been interesting to say the least. God did indeed answer my prayer to be an instrument of peace - he has given me many opportunities to practice this prayer.

I have had prayers answered in my life many times, not all of which the answer was clear at the time. My first-born son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was younger. He had many problems through the years, and I prayed for help because the medical help I had available was inadequate for the problems he was having. Our family wound up moving to another state and looking for other jobs. We got to know one neighbor of ours, and she has dealt with the same things we are going through. She gave us all of the information we needed to get my son the help he needs.

I have been having a terrible time with my job. I'm concerned that the plant will close and I'll be out of a job; but more than that I was threatened by a woman I work with. When I discussed it with management, all heck broke loose. I was so miserable when I walked into Barnes & Noble and went right to the table where you book was laying in the religion section. I went right to your book, first thing. It was in the back of the store on a table in the religion section, so I thought it was remarkable that I went directly to something in the store that could help me immediately, and did so first thing. I prayed the whole book and am still praying as I read and re-read it. The prayer that helped me was "God Give me Peace." I felt so burdened at the time. Exactly like I was being ground down to the floor. I've never prayed for peace before because my mother always taught me that if I prayed for peace I would be sent tribulation. That was her experience and I think it was the Lord teaching her to be patient and trust in him and to overlook any circumstances. I was afraid of the tribulation part, so this was something I never prayed. I read the chapter and when I prayed for peace, I was instantly given peace. In the midst of such horrible turmoil. I'm getting so much out of your book, I want you thank you for writing it.

Going away from home for a long time can be scaring. You immagine what will happen to your loved ones in the meantime. I was away from home for six years and this was one of the hardest time in my life and I asked God the joy of seeing my loved ones again after this period. Coming back and seeing them is one of the greatest miracles the Lord has done for me. He listens to us and asks of us only what he has given the grace to accomplish.

Six years ago our daughter began having epileptic seizures. They continued to grow in severity and frequency. They could not be controlled by medications--we tried many--alone and in combinations. Finally, we were led to try the ketogenic diet for epilepsy. I am confident that God answered our prayers (and the prayers of many of our family and friends. Our daughter is fine now. Praise and Thanks be to God!

God has answered inumerable prayers for me but the most amazing one is a prayer that I said for my neice who is 40 years old and was diagnosed with bone and lung cancer. That was a year and a half ago and she is almost completely free from cancer and feeling great but the best part is that she is completely at peace with the fact that she was and could still be near death.

Two and a half years ago, my daughter, Terry, was in the final stages of terminal cancer. She had been through a difficult divorce and since then had been away from the Church. I had been praying daily that God would give her the grace to return to her Faith. On a Sunday evening about a week and a half before her death, she told me she wanted a blessing and asked me to call our priest. Father came the following morning to spend some time with her and anoint her. When I came in later that day she was cheerful and gracious, and remained so, concealing her pain and continously thanking her nurses and aides for their care, and her family for our love and support.

My answered prayer came in the form of a job assignment after I prayed that whatever God wishes to grant me in this area I will accept. After being without a job assignment for over a year suddenly and quite unexpectedly I received a phone call asking me if I was ready to start a job assignment in one week. Of course my answer was "YES" and I have been woreking steadily for the eight months. God does only answers our prayers when HE decides that the answer will be the best thing for us. Sometimes a long wait may mean that the answer is "NO" and it is at that time that we realize that HIS silence was indeed HIS answer. Trusting God means waiting for God to answer in the way that's best for us and this is what I have realized every time I pray for some special favor. Right now I am praying for the physical healing of several friends who are suffering from diseases which it appears only God can deal with. As with my receiving the job assignment after a long period of time, I realize that God has heard my prayer and is allowing my friends to continue to suffer since it is causing my friends to come closer to HIM. Perhaps this is God's answer but I still continue to pray for their healing and if God's Will is that they be healed, then so be it and if not, then I accept the fact that God's knows much better what is good for my friends than I know. So my final thought is to pray, pray and pray some more and allow God to be God and answer my prayer in what's best for me and my friends.

One of many answered prayers. In 2005 I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Italy with a group from a parish where the priest was a family friend. It was going to cost about $2500., which, with a son ready to graduate high school and headed to college, seemed an impossibility. But I prayed. I knew my husband and I could not possibly both go, and he was very generous in telling me to go, even suggesting I invite his mother to join me on the trip. This took care of the "who" would go, as she very quickly accepted the invitation. Now the "how", where was I going to come up with the "extra" money that had no earmark. As I was praying about it, I remembered I had several shares of stock that had been given to me 20 years earlier when I left a company I was working for. I excitedly went to my lockbox to get the stock certificates to see how many shares and their value. They weren't there!! After 20 years, at least 3 moves, boxes in storage, only God knew where those certificates were. I prayed to God that if He wanted me on this pilgrimage, to lead me to those certificates. I was in the middle of tearing up my house, when I felt a calmness suddenly, and a thought to look in a folder on a shelf in another room came over me. I went right to where I was "led", and there they were. I took that as an answer that God wanted me on this trip. My mother-in-law and I shared this experience of going to many shrines, Churches, daily Mass, a general audience with the Pope. Then a few months later, she went to have minor surgery done and ended up with a triple by-pass. She developed complications, and we were told one Friday night that she would not survive the night. Family was called, prayers increased, and by a miracle, a nurse turned her on her side. When this happened, the numbers on the machines all began to increase, idicating to the heart doctor that her heart was sitting in a sack of fluid. They did a third surgery, and saved her life.
